Rattlesnake Bites Child of W.A. King
I have a Brownsville Herald article dated Feburary 7th, 1914 and titled "Rattlesnake Bites Child of W.A. King." The article reads as follows:
"The three year old child of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. "Snake" King was seriously injured late yesterday afternoon when a rattlesnake struck at the child's arm as it was playing around a box of the reptiles. The blow was on the little one's left arm and within minutes the arm was swelled to where it was double its normal size. Dr. B.O. Works was called and he cauterized the wound thoroughly. Though the injury is still serious it is not believed today that it will be fatal. "
"The Kings have taught the child not to be afriad of snakes and it frequently plays with the dangerous reptiles. It seems that yesterday a box of snakes uncovered was brought to the snake farm in the north eastern part of the city and placed in a room where the child was playing. The baby picked up a stick and began poking it into the box of snakes. One of them became enraged and struck at the little one. First remedy from those familiar with snake bites was given but as the swelling did not stop the physician was called at once. "
I want to emphasize that the child reported in this article is not the same one posted on this entry. The King baby being mentioned, unless I stand corrected by my great uncles is Abraham William King. The picture itself contains the following notes:
"nino de chelo king"
"he (snake) was albino too"
"James DeValintone"

Hey there,
I'm a native Brownsvillian. My grandmother, Rosa Sanchez (later, Rosa Miller) bought exotic birds for "Snake" King. I think it was in the 1920s. I believe I may have a photo of Abraham King who was a friend of hers from those days. If you would like to contact me, I can be reached at texasbird (at) comcast (dot) net.
Regards,
Miriam Perry Mimms
